BLACK BEAR WITH CUB

TAHSIS RIVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

A mother Black Bear and its cub walk the shore of the Tahsis River in search of Salmon.

Black Bears are clever opportunists who are not afraid to explore new food sources. (This can get them into trouble where they cohabitate with humans, as particularly bold Bears sometimes end up in people's garages, or opening every car door in sight.) It is no surprise that such resourceful creatures would have learned to capitalize on the region's biggest annual injection of nutrients - the Salmon Run.

Catching a fresh salmon is no easy task. They are tough and fast - full of muscle and vigour. This cub isn't ready to hop into the river and pull a 30-pound Chinook Salmon out of the current. It must learn what it can from its mother, for the 1-3 years it will spend with her.
