GREAT BLUE HERON
VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The Great Blue Heron is a harpoon of a bird that can stand statuesque for impressively long periods of time, then unfurl its neck in a lightning-fast strike. Despite standing over a meter tall, it weighs less than six pounds.

These herons are year-round residents in Nootka Sound. They are fishing specialists, but readily eat all sorts of other prey - crabs, shrimp, amphibians, other birds, and even small mammals.

Although they are residents of Nootka Sound, this is one of two pictures hung in the café that was taken elsewhere on Vancouver Island.
