SANDPIPERS IN KELP

NOOTKA ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA

On the West Coast of Nootka Island, the tide washes up heaps of kelp, sometimes two feet deep. Swarms of beach hoppers and kelp flies are drawn to feed on the kelp, and shorebirds, like these Western Sandpipers, feed on the flies and beach hoppers.
