In late fall, when the Salmon run is thinning and clear nights threaten frost, Trumpeter Swans gather in the shallow waters of Nootka Sound. The swans take refuge in the sound's open waters until early spring, when they return to their breeding grounds. Here, a pair, which may stay together for life, glides past a grove of Red Alder.

Trumpeter Swans are by far the region's biggest birds. They can weigh up to 38 pounds, with wingspans of up to 10 feet. For comparison, a Great Blue Heron only weighs about 5 or 6 pounds.
